The Pyramids at Saqqara and Dashur - Day 6

This is the Red Pyramid at Dashur. We were able to hike up to the entrance about halfway up.
From the entrance we were able to descend 150 meters to the Chambers where the sarcophagus and all the other stuff was found. The descent was down a narrow shaft that we needed to walk backwards with knees bent while rubbing our backs along the top. Think walking backwards down a non moving escalator for 450 feet while being hunched over.
We declined the camel ride again. I hurried and snapped this photo as we were pulling away. If the Camel rider (see, I didn't say Camel Jockey) see's you taking his photo, he will ask you for money.
This is the Pyramid Djoser at Saqarra. The first Pyramids were built like this with many levels. The art of Pyramid building was evolving at the time of its construction.
The Pyramids that we saw today were located some distance from the city of Cairo (unlike the Pyramids at Giza which are on the outskirts of Cairo). Along the drive we saw countless horses, water buffaloes, and donkeys being ridden or used to carry "stuff" and/or carts.

It's been an incredible week in Cairo. Visiting Pyramids that are 4,000 years old is mind boggling. We've loved our time here, however we are ready to leave this third world country and return to America and our children.

Thank you Shirlee, Dave, Maya, and Ethen for being wonderful hosts and tour guides. We can't wait to visit you at your next home. We're crossing our fingers for London or maybe even Australia.
